Intention: Before the Mark

Resim
The mark begins before it becomes visible. "Before the brush touches paper, something has already begun to take shape." Intention begins before the mark.  In my practice, intention is not a fixed plan or a rigid idea imposed on the image. It is a quieter state of alignment — a way of arriving before the brush moves.  What matters to me is not to control every outcome in advance, but to enter the work with clarity. Breath settles. The body becomes attentive. The hand prepares to move. In that brief interval, intention takes form.  This moment is often invisible, yet it shapes everything that follows. It records pressure, speed, hesitation, and release with unusual clarity. A mark may appear simple, but within it there is already timing, breath, and the condition of the hand that made it.   Ink can be quiet, but it is never neutral. Even the lightest wash contains a decision. Even the darkest stroke carries more than shape; it carries force. This is why I continue to return to ink with respect. In sumi-e, ink is not only used to describe form. It gives form it...
