My Artistic Manifesto

Resim
The brush does not move by the hand alone; it moves with the body, the breath, and the state of the spirit. "The Silence of Stone, the Patience of Water, the Breath of the Brush"  Art, for me, is not merely the depiction of what is visible. It is the pursuit of what remains unseen. I believe that one can encounter an inner journey in the silence of stone, in the flow of water, in the fragility of paper, and in the breath of a single brush gesture. For me, art is not a field of display, but a way of deepening through simplicity. As the unnecessary falls away, the remaining trace becomes clearer. Sometimes a mark, an unfinished circle, or a silent space can speak more deeply than many words. In my works, the wisdom of Anatolia does not appear as a motif or ornament. It becomes visible through the silence of stone, the patience of water, the fragility of paper, and the breath of the brush. Anatolia, for me, is not only a geography. It is memory. It is the deep knowledge ca...

Ma: The Living Interval

Resim
The interval is not empty; it is where the work begins to breathe. "What is absent is not empty; it is what allows presence to breathe."  Ma is often understood as emptiness, but for me it is something more living than that.  It is not simply a blank space, and not a lack to be filled. It is the interval that gives rhythm, relation, and meaning to what appears. In this sense, ma is not outside the work. It is part of the work itself.  In sumi-e, what is left untouched can be as important as what is marked. A line does not speak alone. It speaks with the silence around it. A gesture does not live only through movement, but through the pause that allows movement to breathe.  Over time, I have come to understand that ma is present not only on paper, but also in practice. It appears in the pause before the brush moves, in the stillness between gestures, in the restraint that prevents the image from saying too much. It is the living interval where form remains open. ...

Gratitude: After the Gesture

Resim
After the gesture, gratitude becomes a form of stillness. "When the mark is complete, what remains is not only the image, but a quiet sense of thanks."  Gratitude enters the work after the gesture, but it does not arrive too late. In many ways, it has been present from the beginning.  When a painting is complete, what remains for me is not only the image on paper. There is also a quieter feeling: a sense of thanks for the moment, for the materials, for the breath that carried the gesture, and for the unseen clarity that allowed the work to appear.  In sumi-e, so much depends on conditions that cannot be fully controlled. Paper, ink, water, body, breath, attention — each one participates. Because of this, I do not experience the finished work as something I have mastered alone. It feels more honest to receive it with gratitude.  This feeling is not dramatic. It is quiet. It comes after movement, after concentration, after the line has settled. What remains is a bri...

Ensō Is Not a Formula

Resim
An ensō does not repeat a form; it records a moment.   Ensō Is Not a Formula What appears as a circle is never only a circle.  Ensō is often seen as a simple form. A circle, a gesture, a sign. But in practice, it is never only that.  For me, ensō is not a formula to repeat, and not a symbol that can be separated from the moment in which it is made. Even when the form appears familiar, each ensō carries a different condition: a different breath, a different balance, a different degree of hesitation, release, or clarity.  This is why I do not approach ensō as an exercise in perfection. What matters is not to produce an ideal circle, but to remain present enough for the gesture to become true. In that sense, ensō is less about geometry than about condition.  A single line can reveal much more than shape. It can reveal whether the movement was forced or alive, whether the body was connected or divided, whether the hand followed control alone or allowed something mo...

Breath: The Rhythm Beneath the Gesture

Resim
The gesture begins in breath before it appears in ink.  "Before the brush moves, breath has already begun the gesture."  Breath is the quiet rhythm beneath every gesture.  In sumi-e, a mark may appear sudden, but its movement begins earlier. Before the brush touches paper, breath has already entered the body, gathered the moment, and prepared the gesture.  Over time, I have come to understand that breath is not separate from painting. It is what gives a line its continuity, its calm, its tension, and its release. When breath is disturbed, the gesture often becomes fragmented. When breath is steady, the movement can remain clear and alive.  This is why I do not think of breathing as something that accompanies the work from the outside. It is already inside the work. It shapes tempo, pressure, stillness, and transition. Even a simple line carries the trace of how breath moved through the body at that moment.  In this sense, breath is not only physical. It al...

Body: The Silent Partner of the Brush

Resim
The body enters the work before the image appears. "The brush may be visible, but the body is already inside every line."  The body enters the work before the image appears.  In sumi-e, what is seen on paper may look like the movement of the hand alone. But the hand never acts by itself. Behind it there is posture, balance, breath, tension, release, and the quiet adjustments of the whole body.  Over time, I have come to understand that the body is the silent partner of the brush. It does not announce itself, yet it is present in every mark. A line can reveal whether the body was grounded or unstable, connected or divided, open or resistant.  This is why bodily awareness matters so much in my practice. The quality of a gesture does not begin at the fingertips. It begins in the center, in the way the body gathers and releases energy.  Even stillness is physical. Before movement, there is stance. Before the mark, there is weight, balance, and the invisible prepa...
