Ma: The Living Interval

Resim
The interval is not empty; it is where the work begins to breathe. "What is absent is not empty; it is what allows presence to breathe."  Ma is often understood as emptiness, but for me it is something more living than that.  It is not simply a blank space, and not a lack to be filled. It is the interval that gives rhythm, relation, and meaning to what appears. In this sense, ma is not outside the work. It is part of the work itself.  In sumi-e, what is left untouched can be as important as what is marked. A line does not speak alone. It speaks with the silence around it. A gesture does not live only through movement, but through the pause that allows movement to breathe.  Over time, I have come to understand that ma is present not only on paper, but also in practice. It appears in the pause before the brush moves, in the stillness between gestures, in the restraint that prevents the image from saying too much. It is the living interval where form remains open. ...

Tracing Emptiness

Resim
This work begins with a simple gesture: brush, ink, paper, and a moment of attention. In my practice, the circle is never only a form. It is also a way of approaching emptiness, rhythm, and presence through a single movement. What appears on paper may seem immediate, but it carries hesitation, breath, pressure, and the condition of the moment in which it is made. I return to reduced means because they ask for clarity. Ink does not hide much. Paper receives everything. The brush records not only intention, but also state of mind. To trace the circle is, in some way, to trace emptiness itself. Not to fill it, not to explain it, but to move alongside it with attention. In that brief movement, the image becomes less about control and more about presence. This is one of the reasons I remain close to sumi-e and ensō: through a single gesture, they continue to open a space larger than form.                      ...

Beginning This Space

Welcome to Hilmi Şimşek Studio. This blog was created as a clear and lasting space for sharing my artistic practice beyond the speed of social media. Here, I will publish works, process notes, and reflections shaped by sumi-e, ensō, watercolor, and contemporary ink practice. My work often explores how paper, water, and stone can carry memory, especially in connection with the cultural resonance of Anatolia. I hope this page becomes an open record not only of the works themselves, but also of the thinking that shapes them.                                                                                                                                 ...
