After the gesture, gratitude becomes a form of stillness. "When the mark is complete, what remains is not only the image, but a quiet sense of thanks." Gratitude enters the work after the gesture, but it does not arrive too late. In many ways, it has been present from the beginning. When a painting is complete, what remains for me is not only the image on paper. There is also a quieter feeling: a sense of thanks for the moment, for the materials, for the breath that carried the gesture, and for the unseen clarity that allowed the work to appear. In sumi-e, so much depends on conditions that cannot be fully controlled. Paper, ink, water, body, breath, attention — each one participates. Because of this, I do not experience the finished work as something I have mastered alone. It feels more honest to receive it with gratitude. This feeling is not dramatic. It is quiet.
